Activity Instructions
1.Introduction: Ask pupils: "What do you think about when you hear the term 'Horticulture'. Discuss initial ideas and write them down. Challenge assumptions: Show them a copy of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’. Explain: "Today, we're going to investigate how modern agriculture is changing and what diverse career opportunities it offers.”
2.Distribute/Display Page 30 - 35 of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’ to small groups (2-3 pupils) and ask the pupils to read them.
3.Activity: Horticulture Job Profiles. Direct pupils to the "Case Study" pages featuring Emma Martindale and Daisy Wright.
4.Ask the pupils to answer the following questions about Emma and Daisy. Alternatively they can complete the job profile sheet
"What is their job title?"
"What do they enjoy most about their job?” (Refer to their quotes).
"What skills do you think Emma and Daisy need for their role?”
“How are their jobs different and similar?"
5.Wrap-Up:
Recap: "What new things have you learned about careers in Horticulture today?”
"Do any of these careers spark your interest? Why. “What skills do you already have that could be useful in these areas, even from hobbies or other subjects?"
"Why do you think it's important for us to know about industries like Horticulture, even if we don't plan to work in them?"
Extension Task:
1.Ask the pupils to look at the Lantra Scotland website and find out about 5 careers that they didn’t know was part of the Horticulture sector. Now ask them to create a job advert for one of the jobs.
